Blacksmithing at Rancho Los Alamitos

Historically, the Rancho Los Alamitos blacksmith did any iron work that was needed around the ranch, from welding, to repairing wagons, to auto shop. His duties possibly could have included decorative items, such as the wrought iron stairway in the Secret Garden.

Three years ago our Blacksmith's Shop was cleaned up and restored to its current useful condition. The forge and hood were restored and the windows were replaced. A working forge was installed to avoid using the original forge, and smithing work began on restoration of decorative items around the ranch gardens-notably the stairway in the Secret Garden, which was totally restored as part of a project that received a Preservation Award from Long Beach Heritage.

As a fundraising effort by the Rancho Volunteers for our new Educational Center, utility garden items are once again being hand-made by volunteer Steve Christensen and his team in the Blacksmith's Shop! These items are similar to those that could have been made by the ranch blacksmith in the 1920's era, and their functions are still just as valuable for today's gardener as they were back then. We hope you enjoy their uniqueness, and hand- forged quality. They will be beautiful, long-lasting additions to your gardens.
